About us

High blood pressure (hypertension) is the most common long-term health condition in the UK. More than one third of adults in the UK, approximately 18 million, have high blood pressure. A further one third of UK adults are unaware their blood pressure is high.

High blood pressure can cause stroke, heart attacks and heart failure, making it the second biggest preventable risk factor for death and disability in the UK. As there are no symptoms it is known as the Silent Killer.

Blood Pressure UK is a UK charity dedicated to helping people to know their blood pressure numbers, and advice and guidance of how to reduce those numbers if needed.

Our philosophy

No one should have to lose a loved one to heart disease, live with dementia or suffer the effects of a stroke caused by high blood pressure. We’re here to put an end to unnecessary death and disability.

Our vision

Our vision is for everyone to know their blood pressure numbers in the same way that they know their height or weight, and take steps to keep them healthy, now and in the future.

Our impact

Since October 2000 we have been making a real difference to the 18 million people with high blood pressure. We work to put high blood pressure at the top of the health agenda - in the Government, among health professionals, in the media and for every adult in the UK.

Why we're needed

High blood pressure is responsible for more than half of all strokes and heart attacks in the UK. It’s the third biggest cause of disease, leading to kidney disease, vascular dementia and mobility problems, and costs the NHS £2.1 billion every year.

Around one in three UK adults have high blood pressure, but around one in three of these don’t know it. Because it often has no symptoms, many people don’t know they have it until they have a heart attack or stroke.

Our message

It’s possible to prevent high blood pressure or bring it under control with a healthy lifestyle and medications if you need them, dramatically lowering the risk of life-changing illness.
